WRITTEN BY

Hi. Tell us something about Surya-Anita.
I describe myself as a traveler or a nomad singer. I was born in France and I lived one year in the Reunion Island, where my dad was born and grew up. After that I lived 10 years in Mexico City and now I am in London since 3 years. And my only target is to play music and don’t have a routine in life and always learn more things. So finally I sing different style of music and I have different musical project. I sing swing, gypsy jazz, French music, Latin music and world music in French, Spanish and English.

Tell us about your last music release and about the direction your music is taking.
My last recording was the Edith Piaf Tribute. We recorded 16 songs of Edith Piaf in live recording in 2 days. It was intense but I really enjoyed recording live. It doesn’t matter if it is not perfect but the result is more human and the fact that I sing in the same time with the musicians makes the sound warmer and the singing more natural.
My music has a tendency of being more acoustic and in the future I plan to record my own compositions, with a sound with less effect possible.

Where did you get inspiration for your music?
From life, from my experience, from who I am, we are living in the present, from what makes me laugh and cry.

What is your “home ground” area? What’s the best live act in your area? Tell us something about it.
I live in London and there are lots of very good bands from everywhere here. But I have been charmed by a band called Family Atlantica. It is a mix of traditional music from Venezuela and Ghana. I have been impressed by the voice and the presence of the singer Luzmira Zerpa. I really like this band because their folkloric sound is really authentic.

Which artists have influenced your style & sound, if any?
Many artists. Actually I am influenced by different style of music. But if I give name, it’s Billie Holliday, Edith Piaf, Charles Mingus, Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades Consuelo Velazquez, Cole porter and more.

What’s the last live music show you’ve seen?
The last live I have seen is The Musicos. They are friends of mine and they play Latin music. The show was very good and they managed to get all the English people to dance!

Did you plan to have a tour in the next future? Tell us something about it.
Unfortunately, I haven’t a plan at the moment. But I hope very soon.

What do you think of Livetrigger.com? Do you think it could be a good tool to facilitate the process of booking and organizing shows? Do you have any suggestions?
I think is great idea! It definitely can help to have more booking and diffusion all around the world for the artist. The suggestions that I can give is that it will be good to solicit more venues and festivals but I think it’s just a question of time.
