Hi. Tell us something about The Chemist and the Acevities project.
This project began by a chemist coat, and the name came first. The chemist & the Acevities will be. BenCarbon & HydroJim knew already each others, and had discovered and played together our first scientific notes on six strings guitar. An other experiment, a pedagogic one, made us meet met AscorbicPouce and theorise about music, even if he was forced to ampute himself two strings to take the bass. When they finally met, during an alcoholic and social experiment, a great and spacial drummer named Beberyllium. We are a mainly instrumental band, no talk, surf garage band. But not only influenced by the sixties, not turned to the past, we like to play fast and noisy explosive things, breaking rules. We took inspiration in all energic and sincere stuffs we could listen, read, see or live.
Tell us something about your last musical production.
After a debut album in 2013, recorded on analogic material in three days at Kaiser Lucas Trouble studio, Chagny (Fr) and pressed by a big factory in France, we decided to make an EP with ourselves and some DIY collectifs. We recorded two old titles wich are not onthe LP, whose the first one we played together, and the first part of a new one to follow in the second LP to come (when the protocol will be ready). We recorded in a squatt in Grenoble with Manuel (of the French anarcho-surf band Profs de Skids), pressed by Ameise in Hamburg, screen-printing by us and l’Atelier Typon-Patate in Dijon, insert printed in the old squatt les Tanneries. Produced by Maloka and Acratos.
Which artists have influenced your style & sound, if any?
Dick Dale for the classic, films soundtracks, western movies. The US Man or… astroman?, Ennio Morricone, the French Hawaii Samurai (and Irradiates after), Arno de Cea, punk bands, some movies and books, science fiction and anticipation novels, Kallocaine (Karin Boye), La zone du dehors (Alain Damasio), science research and epistemology. But also HxC and complex noisy bands.
How is being a band from Dijon- France? What’s the best live act in your area? Tell us something about it.
We have been influenced by what happened in Dijon cause a big punk scene has been developped since 1989 and more by Maloka and squatters from les Tanneries. Maloka pressed discs, and helped us for our LP and EP. It’s a great independant and collective producer and diffuser of all stuffs that orbits among punk scene, they organized gigs in the DIY squatt les Tanneries, and other little collectives which made play some alternatives bands. There are also some gigs in bar, like The Peniche Cancale, the Deep Inside.
On Livetrigger.com you define your genre: “Post punk, surf”. What does it mean to be a surf band today?
We don’t pretend and don’t want to play classical surf music. We love surf music but we are a garage band with surf influences. Otherwise, being a surf band today is to hear people saying that you make them thing about Tarantino after a gig. They often say “it’s very good but there should be some voice on your songs”. Being a surf band today means playing with clichés and overtake them. Being a surfband still means reverb effect on guitars but not only.
I know you are planing to do a European tour in the near future. Let us know where you are going to play your next shows.
Last summer we played in Switzerland (St Imier, Zurich Obernau, Delemont, Luzern) and Germany (Mainz). We will soon play in the south of France.

Have you made any tours in Europe in the past? Do you prefer to play in France or outside your country? Are you connected with other bands or musical movements in Europe? Tell us something about it.
We played in France (Bretagne, Marseille, Toulouse, Paris, Dijon, etc), Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. We don’t have preference. We love going in places where we have never been. We have contact with Threesome, Pirato Ketchup, Daikaiju, The Irradiates, Les profs de skids, they playsurf like us. With a lot of energy. We are connected with the alternative scene. We often play in squatts or for several causes (benefit to : Anarchist Black Cross, refugiees, Chiapas, freedom fighters etc).
Tell us something about your best and your worst memory on the road.
Worst: Hasselt in Beligium. We were booked but the organisation was totally crapy. So we didn’t play, we took the road and went back home. Best: so many!
